Sony’s The Interview just released a new hilarious trailer, featuring James Franco and Seth Rogen as the least qualified men to killf Kim Jong-un. The film pokes fun at a relevant topic, and is written by Evan Goldberg, Rogen, and Dan Sterling, who actually asked North Korean authorities to read the screenplay to verify the authenticity. If The Interview is anything like their previous collaboration, This Is the End (2013), laughter is sure to be had.
The film follows Franco, who playsDave Skylark, an entertainment journalist and his producer, Aaron Raport (Rogen). Together, they run a tabloid show, “Skylark Tonight.” Upon hearing that Kim Jong-un is a huge fan of their show, they travel to North Korea to snag an interview.
The trailer (below) portrays the duo just hoping to gain higher acclaim through meeting Kim Jong-un (widely publicized as being diabolically crazy). Lizzy Caplan’s character explains, “Kim Jong-un’s people believe anythiung he tells him, including that he can speak to dolphins or that he doesn’t urinate and defecate.” Franco and Rogen’s visit becomes thorny when the CIA recruits them to assassinate the North Korean dictator. The two are clearly unqualified for the mission, as demonstrated by Franco actually believing that Kim Jong-un talks to dolphins.
The Interview will humorously depict the danger of journalists coming into close contact with madmen. According to Yahoo News, Rogen explained, “People have the hypothetical discussion about how journalists have access to the world’s most dangerous people, and they hypothetically would be in a good situation to assassinate them.”
Columbia Pictures was initially reluctant to be associated with the film, because it centers on an actual oppressive leader. However, this isn’t the first time they have been challenged by fearful producers. In This Is the End, the studio was reluctant to have the comedians play themselves. Goldberg and Rogen explained, “At this point, it almost is discomforting if there’s nothing about the movie that they’re desperately trying to get us to change.”
Hopefully The Interview’s relevance to current news and Franco and Rogen’s comedic talent will simply provide a good chuckle or two, rather than increasing the tension between the U.S. and North Korea. Thiss satirical take on journalism and politics will be released October 10.
