Roadside Attractions’ latest film, The Party, offers a black and white look to its new movie. Interestingly enough, another contemporary black and white film in recent memory has been the focus of plenty of discussions: the now indefinitely-suspended I Love You Daddy starring Louis C.K., which lost its footing in the film industry in part because of its uncomfortably-handled plot matter and in part because of the rising allegations against C.K.
In The Party, it looks like the characters will all be submerged in absolute chaos. The protagonist, played by Kristen Scott Thomas (The English Patient), finds out in the middle of celebration that her husband, played by Timothy Spall (Alice Through the Looking Glass), is ending their relationship so that he can be with another woman. Even worse, she learns this surrounded by her friends, one of whom, played by Cillian Murphy (Dunkirk), is losing his supposedly faithful wife to Spall’s character. However, this is only the beginning of the mayhem, which seems to be gathering steam. Still, the film is also listed as a comedy, which means that it most likely will not keep a completely melancholy tone and it will probably have humorous moments to lighten any potentially saddening progressions to the plot.
The Party will also star Emily Mortimer (Lars and the Real Girl), Cherry Jones (The Village), Bruno Ganz (Unknown), and Patricia Clarkson (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials). Sally Potter (Ginger & Rosa) writes and directs the film.
