A new trailer for Joel Hopkin’s (best known for a different middle-adge comedy, Last Chance Harvey) British comedy Love Punch has been released. The trailer highlights what happens when Pierce Brosnan (famous for his role as James Bond in 007 films) and Emma Thompson (Oscar winner for Sense and Sensibility) play divorced parents, suffering from the loss of their savings to a fraudulent French businessman.
Payback ensues in an unpredictable fashion when the couple travel to France and plans the payback robbery of a diamond necklace belonging to the wife of the thief. The trailer confirms, “Payback’s a beach,” as clips are shown of the couple and friends sporting wetsuits at the French Riviera. The bickering divorced pair bring friends on board to crash the Frenchman’s wedding, including Jerry, played by The King’s Speech’s Timothy Spall and Penelope, dramatized by Bridget Jone’s Diary’s Celia Imrie.
Love Punch seems similar to It’s Complicated in that it is a light-hearted comedy about a divorced couple struggling to reconnect. The beginning of the trailer portrays Thompson objecting to the possibility of triggering lost love with her ex. When a hotel employee states, “You are holidaying together to see if the flame still burns,” she replies, “The flame is out.” By the end of the trailer, Thompson has a change of heart when she admits to Brosnan, “You’re much more likeable these days.” Although this film appears to predictably steer the divorced couple through a familiar journey, it will (maybe no less predictably) do so on a scenic route.
See what happens when the kids are gone and a couple goes on a middle-age adventure to France to reclaim what is rightfully theirs. Love Punch will see a U.K. release April 18, but U.S. distributor Open Road Films has not yet announced its release plans for this side of the Atlantic.
