Twenty years after his first adaptation of the property, German director Uwe Boll is planning to reboot the video game series Alone in the Dark, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Debuting in 1992 through Infrogames, the original Alone in the Dark game follows private investigator Edward Carnby as he’s pulled into a mystery involving a mysterious death and a haunted mansion in 1920s Louisiana. The success of the Lovecraftian-inspired survival horror led to a series of eight games, with the latest being released in 2024.

Boll’s cinematic interpretation, starring Christian Slater and Tara Reid, premiered in 2005 to abysmally poor reviews, receiving a 1% Critical Rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was also a box office bomb, grossing only $12.7 million against a $20 million budget, and is considered one of the worst movies of all time.

The film is one of several indie video game adaptations that Boll would direct in the early 2000s, including House of the Dead (2003), Bloodrayne (2005), Far Cry (2008), and In the Name of the King (2007). The director would briefly step away from filmmaking in 2016 before returning to the director’s chair in 2024.

Now, Boll and his producing partner Michael Roesch have announced they have optioned the film rights from current Alone in the Dark publisher THQ Nordic for a reboot, this time staying more faithful to the original game while following the story of the 2024 one:

“We will capture the spirit and the era of the original games and follow the story of the new game…we can´t wait to reboot the franchise and cast our new Edward Carnby.”

Boll and Roesch also showed interest in turning the franchise into a television series.

In the meantime, the pair is working on a sequel to their version of House of the Dead called Return to Zombie Island, while Boll is also completing post-production on sequels to his 2024 cop film First Shift and has recently wrapped Citizen Vigilante with Armie Hammer.
