Via Deadline, Mad Max director George Miller’s next project is underway in Australia. Three Thousand Years of Longing is the Australian filmmakers middle film between Mad Max movies. The project has been delayed for the last few years, but now is about a third of the way through principal photography.
The film stars Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba and is described as a fantasy-romance-drama with around a $60 million budget. The specifics of the plot are still under wraps, though there will be some action sequences. It is safe to assume that Miller’s visual style from Mad Max: Fury Road will be intact as most of his production crew is returning. DP John Seale, editor Margaret Sixel, and set decorator Lisa Thompson, as well as others are all on board once again. The three mentioned were nominated in their respective fields for the 2015 masterpiece, while the latter two won Oscars in their categories.
Miller is one of the best filmmakers and screenwriters around, though he only makes movies every half decade or so. After the success of the late 70’s and 80’s Mad Max movies, Miller took a dive into children’s films, directing Babe: Pig in the City and the Happy Feet movies in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. A brief look at his resume proves that Miller is versatile and makes movies for many different audiences. This next project for Miller is certainly intriguing with a stellar cast and original story.
Three Thousand Years of Longing is set to wrap production early next year, and will most likely be released near the end of 2021.
In addition to this film, Miller is getting ready to direct the Furiosa spin-off, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
