An enticing title may be in the works over at TriStar as Deadline reports that George Clooney (Tomorrowland) may be in talks to direct new crime drama entitled Suburbicon. The movie- a noir set in the 1950s- comes from a screenplay written by Oscar winning siblings Joel and Ethan Coen (Inside Llewyn Davis) Plot details aren’t quite known, but echoes of the Coens’ 1984 Blood Simple seem implied. Joel Silver (The Matrix) is looking to produce.
If talks come to fruition, it would mark the third time in as many years where another director has tackled a screenplay worked on by Joel and Ethan Coen– they contributed to Angelina Jolie’s 2014 biopic Unbroken as well as Steven Spielberg’s Cold War drama Bridge of Spies (currently in theaters). It makes certain degree of sense for Clooney to come aboard as the Oscar winning actor has a decades-plus working relationship with the Coens. Clooney starred in O Brother, Where Art Thou? (where he earned a Golden Globe Award), as well as Intolerable Cruelty (2003), Burn After Reading (2008) and the upcoming Hail, Caesar! for the Coens.
As a director, Clooney made his debut with the 2002 film Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and earned an Oscar nomination for helming the 2005 period film Good Night, and Good Luck. Since then, Clooney has directed Leatherheads (2008), The Ides of March (2011) and the 2014 flop Monuments Men. Clooney will next appear on screen in Jodie Foster’s upcoming drama Money Monster co-starring Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) and Jack O’Connell (’71).
