Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush has addressed the possibility of reprising his role as Captain Hector Barbossa in a future Pirates of the Caribbean installment, emphasizing that any return would require a compelling screenplay that honors the character’s dramatic sacrifice.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly while attending the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival for the North American premiere of Shinya Tsukamoto’s historical drama Mr. Nelson, Did You Kill People?, Rush reflected on the franchise’s enduring legacy. Barbossa previously met his demise in 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, sacrificing himself to save his estranged daughter, Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), during a climactic confrontation with Captain Armando Salazar (Javier Bardem).
“I think there’s been a big enough break,” Rush stated regarding the hiatus since the fifth film. “I sacrificed myself for my daughter. I don’t want it to be too cheesy and too easy that I come back and go, ‘Give me another payday.’ I respect the scale of the opera that’s almost been created in that 20-year period.”
Rush debuted as the swashbuckling villain in 2003’s The Curse of the Black Pearl and evolved into a core anchor of the Disney franchise, appearing across all five theatrical entries. While dead characters have been resurrected in the series before, including Barbossa’s return at the conclusion of 2006’s Dead Man’s Chest—the actor underscored that a potential comeback would need to avoid trivializing the emotional resonance of his exit. Rush has previously mused about alternative narrative avenues, suggesting Barbossa could reappear in spectral form similar to Hamlet’s father to needle Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow.
The comments come amid renewed speculation surrounding Pirates of the Caribbean 6, following remarks from producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirming ongoing discussions with Depp and continued screenplay development. Walt Disney Studios has not yet officially scheduled a production start or theatrical release date for a sixth installment.
