David L. Cunningham, an acclaimed director and son of Christian missionary Loren Cunningham, is set to bring the story of Genesis to the big screen. The film, titled In the Beginning, is currently in pre-production.
Partnering with Cunningham are The Chronicles of Narnia producer Cary Granat and Oscar-winning visual effects artist Ed Jones. This action-adventure aims to capture the creation story in a way that honors its spiritual roots while embracing scientific insight.
In the Beginning will utilize cutting-edge motion capture and hybrid CGI, spanning from the formation of the universe to the Garden of Eden. The production team includes Jonathan E. Lim, and the project is financed by City Hill Arts.
Cunningham and his team have engaged with religious and scientific leaders, including the Pope and CERN astrophysicists, to ensure a respectful balance between scripture and science. The film aims to speak to audiences across different faiths and cultures, blending biblical storytelling with astrophysical concepts to achieve universal resonance.
Mister Smith Entertainment recently screened an exclusive 15-minute preview to international buyers at the American Film Market (AFM) in Las Vegas, presenting In the Beginning as a PG-rated film. Intended to resonate with both faith-based and general audiences, the film is scheduled for release in December 2026.
