Gendered prizes at awards shows have been a hot topic in the last ten years. Now, starting with the 25th edition, the British Independent Film Awards will be introducing new changes to their awards show: gender neutral categories as well as brand new categories. The BIFAs will be adding Best Lead Performance, Best Supporting Performance, Best Joint Lead Performance, and Best Ensemble to their array of performance categories.
The Best Joint Lead Performance award is described as an award for two or potentially even three lead actors whose performances that are the allied focus of the picture. Additionally, the Breakthrough Performance award sponsored by Netflix will remain a part of the performance categories.
The BIFAs will also be dividing their music honor into two categories, Best Original Music and Best Music Supervision, instead of the original one.
As for directorial awards, a Best Debut Director – Documentary Feature category will be introduced beside the existing Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director sponsored by BBC Film, which will now be for fictional feature films exclusively.
The nominations for the 2022 British Independent Film Awards will be announced on Thursday, November 3rd. The actual show will take place a month later on Sunday, December 4th.
