On November 7, Netflix announced that they have reached an agreement with The Coalition video game production company, to create a live-action film and tv series adaption of the Gears of War franchise.
Gears of War is a video game series based on a society that is on the brink of collapse because of a locust takeover. The delta squad, who are a group of fireteam led by Sergeant Marcus Fenix, are the only hopes to keep humanity from ending. The series has sold over 40 million copies worldwide since it’s release in 2006.
In the announcement, Netflix said that they would be focusing on the film adaptation first, but will shift to creating an animated adult series and other potential opportunities that may arise.
Other production companies have attempted to turn Gears of War into a live-action film since the release of the first game, but no one had any success. In 2007, New Line held the rights to a film adaptation of the video game franchise, but never did anything with them.
Scott Stuber, who is the current Head of the original film department at Netflix, has reached his goal of seeing the live-action adaptation of Gears of War. Stuber was a producer for Universal’s failed attempted at the film.
