After the first few images came out a few weeks ago, the first teaser trailer for Peacock’s special narrative look at the shocking reality behind the darkest corners of religions view of queerness has recently been released. The film takes a look at the ‘Pray Away The Gay’ method of handling the coming out of a loved one.
The film is written, directed, and produced by the writer behind Gladiator and The Aviator John Logan. They/Them is the story of a group of LGBTQIA+ teens who are sent to a gay conversion camp run by Owen Whistler (Kevin Bacon). His idea is a week of programming intended to “help them find a new sense of freedom”. As the camp’s methods become increasingly more psychologically unsettling, the campers must work together to protect themselves. When a mysterious killer starts claiming victims, things get even more dangerous. The cast also includes Anna Chlumsky, Carrie Preston, Theo Germaine, Quei Tann, Austin Crute, Monique Kim, Anna Lore, Cooper Koch and Darwin del Fabro.
So far, the film feels almost like a combination of Sleepaway Camp, Boy Erased, But I’m A Cheerleader!, and Charlie Says.
They/Them will be out via the Peacock streaming service on August 5th of this year.
