The post-apocalyptic Mad Max saga continues as writer and director George Miller returns with the prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road titled Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Anya Taylor-Joy replaces Charlize Theron to star as a younger version of the fierce warrior Imperator Furiosa. The standalone action adventure will focus on Furiosa’s origin story and her fight against tyrannical warlord Dementos, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth. Snatched from her home, Furiosa takes her fate into her own hands and fights for her life in this ruthless, patriarchal wasteland. The high-octane trailer shows glimpses of the beloved tough-as-nails title character as she rides through the desert searching for her way back home. The last few seconds tease the audience with Anya Taylor-Joy’s long locks now cut and shaved down, echoing Imperator Furiosa’s signature look.
Despite the well-established original trilogy, the Mad Max timeline is inconsistent, and doing the math would be pointless, given that this remastered version offers a fresh perspective on the beloved characters. Very recently, Miller was joined by Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth at CCXP to excitedly discuss the upcoming film set to release on May 24, 2024. “He has been birthed into a space where it’s kill or be killed. He’s learned to rule with an iron fist. There’s a charisma to him, and it’s a very manipulative charisma,” Hemsworth says about his character Dementos (via Variety Magazine). Film editor Margaret Sixel, along with other previous collaborators in Fury Road, re-joins her husband Miller to tell Furiosa’s backstory and how she came to be a renegade warrior.
