‘Funan’ Scores GKids’ American Release in April

GKids, the company known for distributing a lot of foreign animated properties for American audiences, has a new film under their belt. The French animated film Funan from 2018 is finally being released in the U.S. during spring 2019. The film is directed by Denis Do and tells a story about a mother searching for her four-year-old son during the Khmer Rouge revolution.

President of GKids, David Jesteadt, stated, “‘Funan is the perfect example of animation’s ability to tell all kinds of stories, for all kinds of audiences”. This makes perfect sense considering nearly all the films they distributed are more about showcasing artistically unique and mature animated films to give a sense of how varied the medium of animation can be.

The studio is most likely distributing Funan in the States this year so they can get Oscars recognition in 2020. This makes strategic sense due to both Denis Do getting major recognition with this film at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and GKids themselves trying to get an Oscars nomination for Mirai in this year’s Academy Awards.

No official release date has been set but Funan is expected to be released in April 2019.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
