Warner Bros. has released the full trailer for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, the final film in director Peter Jackson’s trilogy based on the J.R.R Tolkein novel and prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The trailer gives a strong sense of what’s to come when the film hits theaters. Like the third act in Peter Jackson’s first trilogy, his latest visit to Middle-earth centers on an epic battle featuring the band of dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), elves, orcs, and the dragon Smaug (Bennedict Cumberbatch) – with Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) caught in the fray. In the meantime, the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellan) rendezvous with the elves Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) and Elrond (Hugo Weaving), as well as fellow wizard Saruman (Christopher Lee). Orlando Bloom and Evangeline Lilly also return as the elves Legolas and Tauriel, respectively.
The film was originally titled The Hobbit: There and Back Again, after the novel’s alternate title, until Peter Jackson announced the change last April. The film will hit theaters December 17 in High Frame Rate 3D, regular 3D, IMAX, and standard formats.
