It seems that the Disney success train has reached another major milestone at the box office. Frozen 2, the sequel to their hit film Frozen, just became the highest grossing animated movie of all time, with an estimated $1.325 billion dollars at the box office worldwide. It surpassed both the original film’s $1.281 billion and The Incredibles 2’s $1.243 billion at the box office. Frozen 2 has made about $449.9 million at the domestic box office while making $875.3 million overseas.
The film might be considered the highest grossing animated film, but there’s still a small grey area to consider in that department, as The Lion King (2019) still made more money overall with $1.657 billion worldwide at the box office. However, despite being nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Golden Globes, Disney is still considering the remake to be part of their live action department, even though the majority of that film was made through computer animation. Even without considering the live action Lion King as an animated film, Disney still remains the king of animation at the box office, with the top 3 highest grossing animated films being from Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios.
Frozen 2 has held incredibly strong over the holiday season, even remaining in the box office top 5 despite competition like Spies in Disguise and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Frozen 2 also serves as another massive success for Disney’s financial success, with six of their 2019 films making the billion dollar club (seven if you included the Sony co-production, Spider-Man Far From Home). espite the backlash Frozen may have gained from its popularity, the box office still show that Elsa’s animated reign as Queen is still prominent.
