‘Frozen 2’ Breaks Records With $350 Million in Global Box Office Opening Weekend

Frozen 2 did remarkably well in its opening weekend, setting a record-breaking international box office haul of $350 million. This makes it the biggest day-and-date opening launch for an animated feature, beating the previous record holder, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, for largest box office offshore with $223.2 million.

The Chinese and Korean markets are doing better than predicted. Of the film’s box office earnings that exceeded expectations, the President of Theatrical Distribution for Disney, Cathleen Taff, said “We are definitely thrilled. It’s not easy to follow up the original Frozen. We are cautiously optimistic the film will continue to have legs. With the strong social scores and the holidays coming up, I think we’re going to have a good run.”

It seems that the film’s release at this time of the year was also a good choice, as there isn’t another big family flick to contend with until the release of Jumanji: The Next Level on December 13th.

Frozen 2 still has a ways to go before reaching the $1.276 billion box office total that its predecessor made. In the new film directed by duo Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell reprise their roles as sisters Elsa and Anna. The sisters travel to try to save their kingdom from being destroyed by a mysterious magic and Elsa tries to discover where her own magic comes from. Watch the trailer below.
