Paramount+ has unveiled the trailer for Larger Than Life: Reign of the Boybands, a new documentary featuring iconic boy bands like NSYNC, the Backstreet Boys and 98 Degrees. Directed by Tamra Davis, known for films like Crossroads and Billy Madison, the documentary dives into the explosive rise and evolution of boy bands, tracing their journey from the Beatles to One Direction and the K-pop group Seventeen.
The trailer opens with Donnie Wahlberg from New Kids on the Block proudly stating, “I love boy bands. I’m proud to be in a boy band.” The film also includes commentary from notable names like AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys, NSYNC members Lance Bass and Chris Kirkpatrick and 98 Degrees’ Nick Lachey, who openly reflect on the highs and lows of their careers.
“When you’re in a boy band, you go through really, really hard times,” Lachey shares, noting how 98 Degrees would eagerly watch the TRL countdown, tracking their place in the lineup daily.
Johnny Wright, the music manager who helped guide acts like Menudo, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, also offers his industry insights, providing viewers with a behind-the-scenes look at the intense dynamics of managing boy bands.
The documentary doesn’t just focus on the stars; it’s also a tribute to the fans who fueled their success. A One Direction fan shares a light-hearted moment in the trailer, joking, “One Direction fans are like the CIA. We had eyes on them.” McLean also acknowledges their support, adding, “We would not be who we are without the fans.”
Produced by Wright and Van Toffler for Gunpowder & Sky, Larger Than Life is set to premiere on Nov. 12, promising a nostalgic journey through the phenomenon of boy bands and the cultural impact they continue to hold.
