The world of fashion has made for compelling drama on film, especially when you look at 2009’s Coco Before Chanel, or more famously, The Devil Wears Prada (2006). Now Fox Searchlight is in talks to adapt the British sitcom Absolutely Fabulous for the big screen, according to Deadline.
The project will bring back series stars Jennifer Saunders (Shrek 2) and Joanna Lumley (The Wolf of Wall Street) as Edina and Patsy, a PR agent and Fashion Magazine Editor, respectively. Julia Sawalha (Chicken Run), who played Edina’s daughter in the sitcom, is also confirmed. On the show, Patsy often used Eddy’s standing in the fashion world to live an extravagant lifestyle. The show lasted six seasons and was nominated for a number of BAFTA Awards, winning once for Best Comedy, and helped Saunders and Lumley each win one for their performances.
A number of British comedies have gotten the cinematic treatment. The more recent hit series The Inbetweeners has gotten two films and there is currently an adaptation for Dad’s Army in the works. There have been talks about turning Absolutely Fabulous into a film for quite some time. Early developments indicated that the movie would be called Edina and Patsy, after the two main characters. Fox Searchlight acquiring the project definitely moves development furthur along.
The film is currently in early pre-production stages but Saunders has said that they hope to start production by the end of the year.
