Twentieth Century Fox released a trailer today for their video game adaptation reboot Hitman: Agent 47. The film is an adaption of the long-running video game series that follows a genetically-altered assassin, Agent 47 (Rupert Friend from Showtime’s Homeland). This is Fox’s second adaptation of the franchise. In 2007 they released Hitman, starring Timothy Olyphant (This is Where I Leave You) as the titular killer. While the iconic character appears to be the central focus in the new film, the trailer alludes to him not being the same protagonist as the character in the first film.
Also starring in Agent 47 is Zachary Quinto (Star Trek: Into Darkness) and Hannah Ware (Shame). Quinto plays John Smith, who finds Katia van Dees (Ware), the daughter of the creator of the program (Ciaran Hinds) to uncover the secrets of the program and her ancestry. Like the previous film in the franchise, Agent 47 favors big action over more subtle touches, though it does appear as though the film will pay homage to the characters’ many costume changes in the game.
This is the feature directorial debut for music video director Aleksander Bach. The screenplay was written by Kyle Ward, who previously wrote the script for Machete Kills and also penned the scripts for two other video game adaptations in development – the gothic action series Devil May Cry and the gritty heist movie Kane & Lynch.
Hitman: Agent 47 will be released on August 28, 2015. Check out the trailer below:
