Actress Sophie Nyweide, who acted in seven films by age 10, has died. The actress was 24. Shelly Gibson told The Hollywood Reporter that she died in Bennington, Vermont, and that “police there are investigating.” Nyweide started as a child actor, acting in her first role in 2006’s Bella when she was only 6. Over her career, Nyweide has 12 acting credits, according to IMDB, most of which were when she was a child.
Those credits include playing the daughter of Michelle Williams and Gael García Bernal in the 2009 romantic drama Mammoth. Nywiede also played a young girl whose mother is dying of cancer in the Jessica Alba-led film An Invisible Sign, released in 2010, which New York Times film critic Jeannette Cotsoulis admired, saying the young actress “should have a glowing future.” Her other credits include the Noah Bombach-directed drama Margot at the Wedding, Shadows and Lies (2010), which starred James Franco, and the Darren Aronofsky-directed biblical epic, Noah (2014), which starred Russell Crowe.
Sophie Nywiede was born on July 8, 2000, in Burlington, Vermont. The young actress became interested in acting after watching movies at the Village Picture Shows Cinema in Manchester, Vermont, which her mother bought in 2003. The cinema closed in 2019. “She grew up in this movie theater and slept in the movie theater and had a little bed in the projection booth and watched many movies”, recalled her mother in a 2010 interview.
“Her death has left a hole in all. Sadness, loss, heartbreak and even anger is present for those who loved her and now will have to continue on without her laughter, infectious passion and zest – without those amazing blue eyes that could look directly into one’s soul”, said Nyweide’s mother in a statement made to The Hollywood Reporter.
