It is love in its barest and purest form. Equals tells the story of dystopian society that has erased all emotion from the human condition. The most taboo of these emotions is love. After a glitch effects two members of the society, Nia (Kristen Stewart) and Silas (Nicholas Hoult), the pair begin to fall in love and must stick together to escape the rigid forces keeping the system in place.
Written by Nathan Parker (Moon) and directed by Drake Doremus (Like Crazy), the film is also a parable that explores the conditions leading to the end of a long term relationship. Guy Pearce (Memento), Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook), and Bel Powley (Diary of a Teenage Girl) also star.
The trailer features a distinctive and stark color scheme that pulls all of the focus onto Stewart and Hoult and the world of emotions at work. Doremus has created a clear aesthetic that will likely play well to both the romance and indie audiences.
A24 and DirecTV picked up the film for distribution last October and will release it in theaters on July 15.
