Focus Features has set release date for the Matt Damon-led drama Stillwater, which is being directed by Spotlight filmmaker, Tom McCarthy. It was announced in May 2019 that McCarthy and Damon would be teaming up for the film, which will finally launch in theaters July 30, 2021.
Damon stars as Bill, an oil rig worker from Oklahoma who travels to France to attempt to exonerate his estranged daughter, played by Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin, who is in prison for a murder she claims she didn’t commit. César Award nominee Camille Cottin also stars in the film.
McCarthy wrote the film’s script alongside Marcus Hinchey, Thomas Bidegain and Noé Debré. The director will also produce with Jonathan King, Liza Chasin and the late Steve Golin. Dreamworks is producing Stillwater with Participant Media, which worked with McCarthy on his Best Picture winner, Spotlight.
“The opportunity to reunite with Tom after Spotlight and to partner with our friend and colleague Jonathan King for the first time in his new role makes Stillwater a very special film for everyone at Participant,” said Participant CEO David Linde when production was announced. “This is a wonderful script, centered on universal themes of connection and the search for truth, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring it to audiences around the world.”
This isn’t the only anticipated film from Damon set to release this year. The actor is also set to star opposite Ben Affleck, Jodie Comer and Adam Driver in Ridley Scott’s upcoming film, The Last Duel, which is set to release later this year October 15.
