Focus Features has acquired the North American rights to the upcoming film Suffragette starring Meryl Streep (Into the Woods) and Carey Mulligan (Far From the Madding Crowd). The film, which centers on the early 20th century fight for women to obtain the right to vote and the pioneers who made it happen, also features Helena Bonham Carter (Cinderella).
Suffragette focuses on Mulligan’s character, Maud, a working mother and wife who comes to the realization that she and her sisters-in-arms must fight for their rights despite the damage it might do to their relationships and their livelihoods. Streep portrays Emmeline Pankhurst, a woman widely considered to be one of the mothers of the Suffragette movement in the UK. Bonham Carter joins the cast as Edith New, notorious for being jailed for throwing rocks through windows at 10 Downing Street, residence of the British Prime Minister.
Suffragette is the first film ever to be allowed to shoot at Britain’s Houses of Parliament. The film is directed by Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane) from a script by Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady). Focus is eyeing a fall 2015 release, just in time for awards season.
