This past week, Focus Features acquired The Little Stranger, the next film from director Lenny Abrahamson, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind the 2015 art-house success Room. Slated to begin production this summer in the United Kingdom, The Little Stranger is period ghost story that is set to star Domhnall Gleason (Ex Machina), Ruth Wilson (Saving Mr. Banks) and Charlotte Rampling, recent Oscar nominee for 45 Years.
The Little Stranger is a period thriller set on an isolated English village shortly after World War II. The film will further develop into a ghost story set on an estate that may be haunted. The movie serves as an adaptation of Sarah Waters’ 2009 novel and was written for the screen by Lucinda Coxon. Coxon previously penned The Danish Girl (which earned Alicia Vikander an Oscar two years ago) and was also released by Focus Features.
In a statement, Peter Kujawski commented, “We’re thrilled to be working with Lenny, a filmmaker who has proven to redefine every genre he takes on. We are excited to be partnering once again with our good friends at Pathé and Film4 on The Little Stranger, a classic ghost story to chill moviegoers.” Focus nearly has complete worldwide rights on the title – the exceptions being U.K., France and Switzerland, where the film will distributed by Pathé. The Little Stranger will likely arrive stateside sometime next year.
Aside from Room (which won Brie Larson an Academy Award), Abrahamson previously directed the eccentric music themed comedy Frank, which starred Michael Fassbender as well as Gleason.
