With Thunderbolts* set to release through Marvel on May 2, 2025, Florence Pugh is set to star as an antihero who teams up with other superheroes to enact a government mission. Pugh recently claimed that the upcoming movie has an A24 feel to it and will have a different style than other Marvel movies in the past, based on her statement with Empire Magazine as follows,
“It ended up being this quite badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes,”
The film will be directed by Jake Schreier who received previous acclaim with his A24-produced Netflix series, Beef. Schreier has explained how Thunderbolts* will have a different tone than other MCU pictures and elaborated on this by saying,
“There’s a certain amount of that Beef tone in it, that does feel different. There’s an emotional darkness that we brought to this that is resonant, but doesn’t come at the expense of comedy.”
Thunderbolts will be produced by Kevin Feige and executively produced by Brian Chapek, Louis D’Esposito, and Jason Tamez. Florence Pugh is reprising her role as Yelena Belova who originally appeared in the Black Widow movie as well as featured in three episodes from the Hawkeye series on Disney+. She is also set to star in the upcoming Avengers films, Avengers: Doomsday, and Avengers: Secret Wars. Pugh is also credited for her voicework as an alternate Yelena Belova in Marvel Zombies.
