EuropaCorp dropped the very first trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets this morning. Directed by sci-fi and action visionary Luc Besson, – known for films like The Fifth Element, Lucy, and Leon: The Professional – the film is based on the comic series by Pierre Christin created in the 1960s.
Dane DeHaan (The Place Beyond the Pines) stars as Valerian, a time traveling agent investigating cases throughout the galactic empire along with his partner Laureline, played by Cara Delevingne (Suicide Squad). The film also stars Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, Rihanna, and John Goodman.
The official synopsis from EuropaCorp is as follows: “Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.”
The first trailer is nothing short of mesmerizing. Presented to the tune of “Because” by The Beatles, the mostly montage footage is given an other-worldly, dreamlike atmosphere. Besson’s sci-fi vision and motion capture work also looks highly ambitious, making the July 2017 release date feel even further away.
