Next month an original film is scheduled to hit theaters that takes the classic heist film in a new direction. Directed by Miranda July, Kajillionaire shows the life of family that has made their living off of scams, theft, and manipulation. The first trailer has debuted, showcasing Evan Rachel Wood and Gina Rodriguez as the leading ladies.
The story follows Robert (Richard Jenkins) and Theresa (Debra Winger), two con artists who have trained their only daughter, Old Dolio (Wood), her entire life to assist them on their day to day small and larger scale heists. We see them swiping from mailboxes, donning disguises, dodging videocameras, and forging signatures to gradually rack up enough funds to make rent. Their routine gets shaken up when the parents allow a stranger (Rodriguez) to join the team for a mission, breaking up the familiar family dynamics and causing rifts that Old Dolio must content with when deciding whether or not to break loose from her family.
The entire trailer is given a dreamy overtone with a new track from Angel Olsen, and shows director Miranda July’s characteristic quirky comedy. The film was a hit at Sundance and was scheduled to also be in the 2020 Cannes Film Festival lineup.
It is expected to be a top indie film of the year and will be getting a September 18 theatrical release from Focus Features.
