Following the release of the highly anticipated first trailer for ShowBiz Direct’s upcoming Reagan biopic Reagan, fans have been abuzz over what appears to be a deep dive into the controversial president’s private life and political career and his portrayal by Dennis Quaid. Set to a cover of the Tears for Fears hit “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, the trailer ties together events of Reagan’s personal life, such as confronting bullies as a child and his relationship with his wife Nancy, with his quest for political power that this song choice suggests.
In the wake of Adam Mckay’s Oscar-nominated 2018 biopic “Vice”, which starred Christian Bale as vice president Dick Cheney and was largely understood as a criticism of the Bush administration, the trailer leaves unclear whether Quaid’s depiction of Reagan will be primarily a criticism or a puff piece, leaving audiences on the edge of their seats for the film’s release this coming August. However, as is suggested by the trailer’s combination of moments ranging from Reagan’s formative years as a child to iconic political speeches, such as the infamous “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall”, there is no aspect of Reagan’s life this biopic will shy away from.
Also starring Penelope Ann Miller as First Lady Nancy Reagan, Mena Suvari as Reagan’s first wife Jane Wyman, Lesley-Anne Down as Margaret Thatcher, Kevin Dillon as Jack L. Warner, and Jon Voight as Viktor Petrovich, a Soviet spy, audiences will not want to miss this film’s release on August 30.
