Nearly four years after her tragic death, a trailer has surfaced for the upcoming Amy Winehouse documentary Amy. Director Asif Kapadia’s film explores the singer-songwriter’s all-too-brief career through her music and her own words.
Kapadia, a BAFTA award winner for the 2010 doc Senna, explores the multiple Grammy winner’s life through a combination of archival footage, interviews, stills, and the artist’s songs. In clips, Winehouse muses on her perspective on fame, declaring that she didn’t think she would ever be big, nor that she could handle it if she were. Sadly, the latter may have turned out to be the case, as the talented performer, whose 2006 single “Rehab” rocketed her to stardom, tragically died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 at the young age of 27.
Amy is produced by James Gay-Rees for Focus Features International. The film is set for release in the UK on July 3. Distributor A24 recently acquired rights for a US rollout, but no release date has been set. Check out the trailer below.
