First Teaser for Disney’s ‘Tomorrowland’

Disney has debuted a teaser trailer for the mysterious Brad Bird helmed sci-fi Tomorrowland. The movie, about a young girl who joins a former child prodigy on an adventure somewhere in time and space, stars Britt Robertson (TV’s Under the Dome) and George Clooney (The Monuments Men).

Tomorrowland is inspired by the popular theme world of the same name, found at Disney World and operating since the 50’s. Much of the film’s key plot points have been kept under wraps, with only a brief log line to appease the curious. The teaser does little to change that, and in fact works to raise more curiosity, but it should also generate more interest.

The trailer only briefly hints at the sci-fi elements of Tomorrowland, mainly through a mysterious pin and a peek at the world Robertson and Clooney’s characters travel to. This is the second live-action feature for Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, Ratatouille) after 2011’s Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol. He also wrote the script along with Damon Lindelof (Star Trek Into Darkness) and Jeff Jensen.

Audiences will remember the mega-success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, starting with the first (The Curse of the Black Pearl). That film was based on a Disney theme park ride, a novel idea at the time, and proved to be a huge payoff for Disney in the form of a new franchise. Audiences may, however, have forgotten that Disney’s other attempt at a theme ride-based film was 2003’s Haunted Mansion starring Eddie Murphy. That film failed to impress people and critics and ultimately receded back into the business of strictly being a beloved Disney attraction. Tomorrowland is surely gunning more for the success of the former.

Also starring in Tomorrowland are Judy Greer (Men, Women & Children), Kathryn Hahn (This is Where I Leave You), Hugh Laurie (TV’s House), Keegan-Michael Key (TV’s Key And Peele), and Tim McGraw (The Blind Side). Tomorrowland is set for release on May 22nd, 2015.
