First Look: Dwayne Johnson As Maui In Live-Action ‘Moana’

The first set photos from Disney’s live-action adaptation of Moana have surfaced, offering fans a glimpse of Dwayne Johnson as the demigod Maui and Catherine Laga’aia as the titular heroine. The film, a reimagining of the beloved 2016 animated classic, has officially begun production in Hawaii.

The images, shared by @reelnewsHawaii, were captured on a popular West Side beach in Oahu. Johnson is seen sporting Maui’s signature long hair and intricate tattoos, while Laga’aia dons Moana’s iconic voyager outfit—a red crop top and beige skirt. The setting includes a life-size recreation of Moana’s double-hulled canoe, known as a wa‘a kaulua.

In addition to the photos, Disney’s Chief Brand Officer, Asad Ayaz, celebrated the start of filming on social media, writing, “Oahu Day 1.” His post included an image of the crew holding a replica of Maui’s oversized hook alongside shots of the Hawaiian sky and surrounding environment.

The use of practical effects appears to be a significant focus for the production. Set photos show detailed wooden boats and other large-scale props that suggest the film will incorporate non-CGI elements to bring the world of Motunui to life. Maui’s massive hook, a key element in the original film, has also been constructed as a physical prop.

While the set photos remain faithful to the animated film, one notable absence was Moana’s pet pig, Pua. It remains unclear whether the character will appear in the live-action version, potentially recreated through CGI.

The live-action Moana is set to hit theaters on July 10, 2026. Fans can expect a mix of practical and digital effects to bring the story’s magic to the big screen, as Disney continues its tradition of reimagining animated classics for a new audience.
