First Look At ‘Rust’ Shots From Late DP Halyna Hutchins

The first images have been released from Joel Souza’s Western ‘Rust.’ Deadline released photos of new looks from the late DP Halyna Hutchins, as well as, DP Biance Cline. Hutchins’ visual work can be seen in two of the photos. The first showing star Frances Fisher backlit against a doorway. The second photo from Hutchins shows a rider on horseback against a sandy backdrop.

The other photos released are from Biance Cline, who took over as Director of Photography after Hutchins was killed by a bullet from a prop gun on the set of the movie.

Cline took over work as DP in April 2023 18 months after Hutchins’ death. The prop gun was shot by star Alec Baldwin during a rehearsal in New Mexico.

Hutchins was killed and Souza was wounded on set after Baldwin shot the gun that he was informed by an AD on set that the gun was “cold.” Baldwin was originally charged with involuntary manslaughter along with armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed in January 2023, but charges against Baldwin have since been dropped. Guitierrez-Reed is facing charges and is set to go to trial in February. She has pleaded not guilty.

Rust, written and directed by Souza, and developed by Baldwin. The movie follows the story of a 13-year-old boy, who after the death of his parents in 1880s Kansas, is left to take care of himself and his younger brother. The pair set off on a journey through the American countryside to find their long-lost grandfather, who has been sentenced to hang for the accidental killing of a rancher.

The movie stars Alec Baldwin, Patrick Scott McDermott, Frances Fisher, and Travis Fimmel. Hutchins’ husband Matthew Hutchins is an executive producer with Grant Hill producing.
