A first look at DCU’s Clayface was quietly revealed last night on the official film’s Instagram page, showing the first image from the third feature entry in Gunn’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Clayface is a notorious Batman comic villain, and though he has made various animated appearances, he has never been adapted into a live-action project, which adds another layer of anticipation to being DC Studios’ first R-rated film.
The first look details a canon DCU Glazed magazine cover, issue #317, featuring Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries), described as a “rising star.” The caption under the post read, “A face you won’t forget.” A couple of easter eggs in the issue include “Future Of Music: Lora De Thesis” which a fan first pointed out it could be a reference to the spinal condition “lordosis” and an additional title features the band Blister Twister, which is a canon DC rock group that is a parody of Twister Sister, the band was first featured in Batman #412 way back in 1940, the same year Clayface was first appeared in Detective Comics #40.
This body horror adaptation will center around Harries’ character, an actor who drinks a substance that is supposed to put him on the path to stardom but transforms him into something horrific instead. The feature is directed by Speak No Evil’s James Watkins from a script by well-known horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan. The first footage from the film was revealed last week during Warner Bros.’ CinemaCon presentation, with Deadline detailing,
In the trailer, we see a highly disfigured character with red eyes lying in a hospital bed. This is clearly a version of our lead character, played by Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries, whom we cut to in various stages of mutilation, pre- and post- some kind of traumatic event. Elsewhere, we see the character wearing a mask, seemingly molting, and with a face he can distort like putty.
This is certainly an interesting way to showcase the first look of the “monster” that is Clayface, but I am sure we will see a glimpse of his clay form soon enough. Clayface is set to come right in the midst of the Halloween season on October 23.
