This December, fans of the Lord of the Rings saga will finally have one of their dreams realized: the first live-action depiction of the dragon Smaug from J.R.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit, the prequel to the beloved trilogy of books. Well, at least a CGI Smaug in a live-action film.
In the second chapter of the film-adaptation that began with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Bilbo and his dwarf companions will encounter the beast who is voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch (The Fifth Estate, Star Trek Into Darkness). Until now all promotional materials for the movie have kept the appearance of the titular dragon from The Desolation of Smaug under wraps, with only glimpses of his head in trailers, however a full image has been revealed in an unlikely place.
In a press event on Monday, Air New Zealand will be landing “Smaug” a Hobbit-themed Boeing 777-300 that features the full image of Tolkien’s dragon on the side of the plane.
This is all part of a big promotion for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug which will be released this December the 13th. Peter Jackson filmed the last three Lord of the Rings films as well as this new Hobbit trilogy primarily in New Zealand, boosting their economy and giving the country their biggest claim to fame (New Zealand is Middle Earth).
