Firewatch has gotten a lot of big news this week. After joining forces with Valve, getting another platform on the Nintendo Switch, and even the publisher releasing new game, it seems that the good news bandwagon must keep on rolling. Developer Campo Santo‘s acclaimed 2014 first-person narrative mystery indie game called Firewatch is in the works for a movie adaptation… again. The first news of a Firewatch film adaptation broke in 2016, when it was reported that Campo Santo had signed a deal with production company Good Universe (Last Vegas, Desperados) for a feature-length adaptation. However, the movie rights went right back to the game studio when Lionsgate acquired Good Universe in 2017.
Now, indie production company Snoot Entertainment (Blindspotting and Little Monsters) has taken over the project, with Keith Calder and Jess Wu Calder (2016’s Blair Witch) set to produce, alongside co-founders of Campo Santo Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin.
According to one of the producers from Snoot Entertainment, the final product could either be a movie or TV show. Nevertheless, Firewatch will have a chance to be on the big screen, not just for gamers.
Apparently, this new adaptation will stick closely to the plot of the game, focusing on fire lookout Henry who is stationed in Wyoming’s Shoshone National Forest of 1989. Connected with his supervisor Delilah only by a handheld walkie-talkie, “Henry ventures from his mountain top into the unknown wilderness below uncovering clues about a mysterious occurrence while facing challenging personal choices”, stated from the studio’s website.
Firewatch had earned Best Debut and Best Narrative honors, among five total nominations, at the 2017 Game Developers Choice Awards.
Calder stated, “Firewatch is a stunning accomplishment, a beautiful and heartbreaking piece of art.” He jokes, “I’m delighted that Sean and Jake are letting us ruin their perfect video game by turning it into a movie and/or TV show.
