According to The Hollywood Reporter, FilmRise has acquired I Dream In Another Language, Ernesto Contreras’ Spanish-English film. The fantasy drama was an award-winner earlier this year, with Sundance bestowing the Audience Award in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition. Reviews have been largely positive, with some calling the film “lyrical, poetic, enigmatic and slowly enthralling.”
Set in Mexico and the Netherlands, the story follows a young university researcher and linguist (Fernando Alvarez Rebeil) on a quest to revive the lost language of Zikril. He travels to a remote village to find the last surviving native speakers of the mysterious ancient dialect which reportedly is a way of communication between humans as well as animals. Ironically, the two people left who know the language, Jacinta (Monica Miguel) and Isauro (José Manuel Poncelis) no longer speak to each other due to a longstanding feud that has kept them apart for 50 years. The script was written by Contreras’ brother and frequent collaborator, Carlos.
FilmRise has also acquired North American distribution rights to Felipe Braganca’s star-crossed teen romance Don’t Swallow My Heart, Alligator Girl! which premiered at Sundance. It is scheduled to stream on Amazon Prime Video later this year.
FilmRise plans to theatrically release I Dream in Another Language in mid-2017.
