The cause of death for filmmaker Jeff Baena, writer and director has been revealed, CNN reports. Baena was married to actress Aubrey Plaza, the two wed in 2021.
Baena was found deceased in his Los Angeles home last week, found dead by suicide by his assistant. He was 47 years old.
Baena’s filmography included collaborations with Plaza, such as 2014’s Life After Beth, 2017’s The Little Hours, and 2022’s Spin Me Round. Baena also directed Horse Girl in 2020 for Netflix, co-writing with star Alison Brie. The experimental film highlighted struggles found when dealing with mental illness and isolation.
Several stars, including frequent collaborator Molly Shannon, have publicly mourned the news of the loss.
During his acceptance speech for Best Director at this weekend’s Golden Globes ceremony, The Brutalist’s Brady Corbet shared that his thoughts were with Aubrey as well as Jeff’s family. Plaza was meant to present at the ceremony before the tragedy.
