An hour from the Toronto Film and TT Production sector and U.S. border, a giant film studio is planned for Hamilton, Ontario. With over 150,000 square feet for their six-studio soundstage, Aeon Studio Group plans to build a 200,000 square foot film and tv production hub. This will include a 40,000 square-foot stage, another at 30,000 feet and four more at 20,000 square-feet each. The six sound stages are scheduled to open in summer 2020.
ASG and the city of Hamilton have signed a memorandum of understanding that includes the 15-acre purchase of city-owned Barton-Tiffany lands. According to Hollywood Reporter, This studio development will include office buildings, retail space and two residential buildings. The sound stages are a combination of purpose-built studio space and warehouse retrofits. A press conference will be held Tuesday to discuss plans for the proposed Hamilton Studio District development, with city mayor Fred Eisenberger, local city councilor Jason Farr and ASG partners Jeff Anders, Mike Brue, Robbie David, and Mark Sakomoto, attending the conference.
This studio will also include around 50,000 square feet for production offices, crafts, set building and other ancillary services for VFX-landen Hollywood blockbusters and TV series. Ontario is offering a generous filming incentive, including an all-spend tax credit of 21.5 percent that is stackable with Canadian film tax credit and the providence’s additional animation/visual effects credit.
Plans for ASG’s facilities will have post production, animation, visual effects and games development, with the anchor tenants still to finalize deals. There is no word on who will be heading this new studio or its first project.
