Deadline reports that Filipina star Lovi Poe is joining director Ben Cookson’s The Chelsea Cowboy, which is based on the life of actor, gangster, and lothario John Bindon. Alex Pettyfer and Poppy Delevingne are also being added to the cast.
This will be Poe’s biggest English-language movie role to date. Her character is the British blues singer Dana Gillespie, who employed Bindon and provided him access to the high life, most famously to the island of Mustique where he met Princess Margaret. Gillespie herself was well known for her personal connections to leading singers and actors. Deadline indicates that a recent biography details her lovers, including David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Michael Caine, Jimmy Paige, Keith Moon, and Sean Connery.
The Chelsea Cowboy follows the rise and fall of Bindon, a man who worked in the shadows and became an actor. Despite a successful career and passionate romances with members of high society, he was unable to let go of his criminal past.
Poe is an actress, singer, and model. She has so far released two studio albums and multiple singles. She is best known in the Philippines for playing Kristal Maisog in the 2006 series Bakekang and Shiela Real in the 2014 drama series Ang Dalawang Mrs Real. Her credits include Mayohan, Sagrada Familia, and the 2012 film Thy Womb.
Stay tuned to see Poe in The Chelsea Cowboy as Gillespie, an iconic, charismatic singer and actor from the sixties.
