Actress Florence Pugh may be joining the cast of MCU’s Black Widow starring Scarlett Johansson, according to The Hollywood Reporter. What is known so far about the plot is that it will focus on Natasha Romanoff, a spy trained by the KGB who eventually left to join SHIELD and the Avengers. Pugh would play a spy with the same skills as Romanoff; this could mean that Pugh will be Romanoff’s enemy.
Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland will be directing the stand-alone Marvel film. She is best known for directing Lore, a Nazi drama.
Pugh’s acting repertoire has included a wide range of roles. She has had experience with a spy-related portrayal in The Little Drummer Girl. Other films that she is noted for are the action film The Outlaw King and Stephan Merchant’s Fighting With My Family. She has recently finished working on the yet to be released film Little Women directed by Greta Gerwig. She will also be the lead in Ari Aster’s horror film Midsommar.
Black Widow will begin shooting in London in June. This might allow the film to be released the following May during the usual time when new Marvel films make their debut.
