Fede Alvarez will direct new film that is to be set to bring back the world of the cult classic Labyrinth, created and directed by Muppets creator Jim Henson in 1986 (the last film he made before his tragic death in 1990). Alravez will cowrite the story with Jay Basu, and Basu will be writing the script as well. The dynamic duo will be coming off of another project together, The Girl in the Spider’s Web (sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), which Basu wrote and Alvarez is currently directing, according to Deadline. The film is in it’s casting stages and will then move into production, the Labyrinth spin off is set to start up once Spider’s Web is complete.
The original Labyrinth feature Jennifer Connelly as a teen who, in a fit of annoyance and angst, wishes her baby brother away. Yet when the Goblin King Jareth (played famously by the great David Bowie) actually steals the baby away with plans to turn him into a goblin the teen girl must enter a world of goblins and wonder to rescue her brother. Alvarez says that they do not intend to replicate the story or even bring back David Bowie’s Goblin King character, he and Basu intend to write an independent story that takes place within the same world but that’s it. They have no intentions to remake the film.
The film is a collaboration between TriStar Pictures and the Jim Henson Co., with Lisa Henson of the Jim Henson Co. producing and Nicole Brown overseeing for TriStar Pictures.
