One of the most iconic movie creatures comes back to theaters this summer. Alien: Romulus’ release date is right around the corner. Alien: Romulus follows a young group of space explorers who come across an abandoned space station and decide to explore it. But they’re put to the test when they encounter something out of their worst nightmares.
With the debut coming up, Director Fede Álvarez has recently divulged the inspiration for the story, specifically the crew that the alien will terrorize in the new installment.
When talking to Entertainment Weekly, Álvarez explained that he wanted to craft the story to be framed from the point of view of those who weren’t experts when it came to space exploration or combat.
He also explained that characters inexperienced with surviving in space will provide an easier connection to the audience, stating “The audience is completely virgin to the realities of space.”
Álvarez also turned his attention to James Cameron’s Aliens when he got the idea. In Aliens, the planet the xenomorph was first discovered has since been terraformed and made into a colony for workers and their families. As ComicBook.com points out, a sequence cut out of the theatrical edition of the film depicted several young children experiencing life within the colony, unaware of the dangers that await them. The sequence was later added back to the special edition of the film.
Alien: Romulus bursts onto the big screen on August 16th.
