The Fast and Furious saga is starting to wrap up the franchise. Fast X will be released on May 19, 2023, after Louis Leterrier took over the director spot in May 2022 from Justin Lin, resulting from creative differences. In an interview with Collider and Leterrier, Leterrier states that they already know how the franchise will end.
The Fast franchise started primarily as a racing movie in 2001 with Dom (Vin Diesel) as a street racer and a cop, Brian (Paul Walker). The franchise later evolved from being more than a racing film and became more of an action franchise.
Fast X is to be the start of the end. Leterrier says that Fast X will end with cliffhanger showing a war for the Fast family. However, the film’s team does take into account plot points that are significant to the story and how the next movie will be set up. Leterrier will also be directing Fast and Furious 11, although this is not the official title, and unsure when the release will be. Leterrier states that after reading the script, he needed to plant the right seeds to reach the franchise’s end.
“We know where we’re ending. The roads we’re going to take are going to be different, but we know where it all ends, and I know as a fan it’s both sort of satisfying and truly surprising. As you know, fan service is tricky because you want to deliver the right thing, but you wanna surprise the people, you don’t want to give them exactly what you know everybody’s expecting the Fast and Furious franchise, where it’s going to end up.”
Leterrier teases that the ending will have significant casualties and be huge in emotion, scope, and action. He says, “You will feel all the feels. Tears will roll.” Initially, the franchise’s final chapter was supposed to take place over two films. However, during the Fast X red-carpet premiere, Vin Diesel hinted at a possible trilogy for the last chapter. Bringing the franchise to 12 films, although this is not confirmed.
