After news broke that director Tim Miller would be leaving Deadpool 2 over creative differences with star Ryan Reynolds, fans made it known who their number one choice would be for his replacement through an online petition – Quentin Tarantino. The petition already has 1700 signatures and counting and has fans drooling over the gory rated-R possibilities.
Getting Tarantino to direct would actually be quite a stretch seeing as how Tarantino typically works within his own creative worlds and has never been attached to a franchise that wasn’t his own. Also, if Miller had a different vision for the film than Reynolds (who, as we know, has a large stock in the character and the films), it is even more likely that Tarantino’s vision wouldn’t perfectly coincide. It is fun to imagine, however, all the indulgently humorous and explicit dialogue Tarantino would bring to the table.
Fans will likely get at least one consolation if Tarantino turns down the prospect, that is, a shout-out to the petition in the actual film. The first Deadpool was extremely tongue-in-cheek, even poking fun at the real-life Ryan Reynolds, so it would be surprising if Reynolds didn’t address the Tarantino petition in some satisfyingly meta way.
Whoever does take Miller’s place, all eyes will be on he or she to bring the same risk-taking and box office success as the first film. Deadpool 2 is set to hit theaters on January 12, 2018. Reynolds will reprise the eponymous role, and Emmy-winner Kyle Chandler (The Wolf of Wall Street) has also already joined the cast.
