The rights to the book Alchemised, written by SenLin Yu, have just been picked up by Legendary Pictures. In the wake of the deal, however, many online are voicing their thoughts on the matter, but more specifically where Alchemised began.
Still a ways out from its debut later in September, Alchemised is a fantasy story about a healer trying to rediscover her own identity in a world ravaged by a magical war. While it is an original story as presented in Alchemised, it started life in a much different way.
SenLin Yu originally wrote a Harry Potter fan fiction story called Manacled, which was uploaded to major fanfare within the community. On top of Harry Potter, MovieWeb also noted that The Handmaid’s Tale was a major influence on the work as well. The story was crafted as a romance between Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy, two characters who were portrayed as rivals throughout the course of the Harry Potter series.
The progression of a fan fiction to a new story has happened other times before over the years. The most noteworthy example is 50 Shades Of Grey, which started as fan fiction for Twilight before author E.L. James spun it into a different work.
MovieWeb also noted that the news has garnered mixed reactions online. Some are looking forward to seeing the film adaptation of the story, but others are less enthusiastic. Many of the negative reactions are based on a feeling of unfairness, pointing out that many authors struggling to get their work out there should be able to get a similar shot.
