Sarah’s Oil, a faith-based historical drama starring Zachary Levi and Sonequa Martin-Green, overperformed in its opening box office on the weekend of November 7th.

The film grossed over $4.2 million. This gross put the film at number 4 in the top 5 of the domestic box office for the weekend of November 7th, outperforming other new releases, such as Lynne Ramsey’s domestic drama Die My Love, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, which grossed under $3 million domestically. Sarah’s Oil fell just below another historical drama, Nuremberg, which features an all-star cast including Russell Crowe, Rami Malek, and Michael Shannon, and grossed $6 million in its domestic debut.

In addition to its surprising domestic box office debut, Sarah’s Oil has also garnered almost universally positive audience reviews. The film received an A+ score on movie survey site CinemaScore, who survey general audiences and has them grade a movie with a letter grade. Additionally, the film currently boasts a 98% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.

What’s also especially surprising about Sarah’s Oil’s box office debut is the film’s distributor. Unlike similar faith-based dramas released over the past couple of years, which typically are distributed by either Lionsgate or Angel Studios, Sarah’s Oil was distributed by Amazon MGM Studios. It’s good news for Amazon MGM Studios, which saw After the Hunt, a prestige drama directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri, which was meant to be the studio’s big awards season push, majorly underperforming domestically, grossing approximately $3.3 million domestically since its platform release throughout October.

Sarah’s Oil is now playing in select theaters throughout the U.S.
