The original Faces of Death film is widely considered to be one of the most controversial pieces of Hollywood history. Directed by John Alan Schwartz, the original is long believed to have contained sequences displaying real life-death.
The remake is now set to be released on April 10 in theaters after Independent Film Company, IFC, in association with Shudder acquired the North American film rights. Daniel Goldhaber directed the film and penned the script alongside Isa Mazzei. The film will blur the lines between fiction and reality when a moderator on a video sharing platform discovers videos of people dying, appearing to be re-enactments of the deaths from the 1978 film. Introducing this concept in the digital age with social media what it is today will surely bring a new twist to this material.
Goldhaber is coming off directing 2022’s How to Blow Up a Pipeline, a film that was produced by his writing partner here, Isa Mazzei. Don Murphy, Susan Montford, Adam Hendricks, and Greg Gilreath are the producers currently attached to the film, while Isa Mazzei, Derek Bishé, and Rick Benattar are the executive producers. Murphy and Montford come from Angry Films Entertainment and have both had a personal hand in the film’s development going back 16 years. They were the ones who gave Goldhaber and Mazzei the resources to bring their vision of the project to life. Goldhaber points to his background in social media as being a catalyst for being able to bring his own unique twist to this story, reimagining it for a world that has changed significantly in the past 50 years. The director was asked in an exclusive interview with Variety how he plans to honor the original film, specifically in getting audiences to truly question whether what they are seeing is real or not.
We came up with a solution to that problem that required a lot of legal and logistical footwork. It’s very important to us to honor the parts of that aspect of the original. We have done our best in the movie to do that within the bounds of the law.
Goldhaber also emphasized the effort that was put in to construct this film in a way that appeals to both hardcore horror fans and audiences who are completely unaware of the film’s predecessor. The rest of Goldhaber and Mazzei’s exclusive interview with Variety can be found here. This remake of Faces of Death will star: Barbie Ferreira, Dacre Montgomery, Josie Totah, Charlie XCX, Jermaine Fowler, Jared Bankens, and J.D. Evermore.
Faces of Death will hit theaters on April 10, 2026.
