‘Face/Off 2’ In Jeopardy As Director Adam Wingard Exits

Nicholas Cage and John Travolta in 'Face/Off' (1997)

Adam Wingard is no longer directing the long-awaited sequel to Face/Off. The director, who previously helmed films such as Godzilla vs. KongGodzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and You’re Next, is no longer attached to the project with no reason given as of yet.

The film now exists in limbo, with its 5-year production being halted until a vision emerges from another creative. Paramount has converted the film into an open directing assignment, meaning that they are open to other filmmakers pitching their own ideas for the film. Back in 2024, Adam Wingard stated that there was a completed script for Face/Off 2 while promoting Godzilla x Kong. He had stated that the sequel was “full-steam ahead,” but obviously that has changed. Despite the director leaving, Paramount’s number one priority with the sequel seems to be reuniting John Travolta and Nicholas Cage.

In an earlier interview with Nicholas Cage, he expressed interest in the sequel, saying,

I think Face/Off is a sequel that lends itself to a lot of twists and turns and unpredictability. It’s almost like if you factor in the idea of offspring and Castor and Sean having children and these children grow up, then it becomes like three-dimensional chess, and then it’s not just the two, John Travolta and myself, it’s four of us ping-ponging and going at different levels, and it becomes even more complex. I think there’s a lot of fertile ground there.

Face/Off was released in 1997, from director John Woo, and starred John Travolta and Nicholas Cage as an FBI agent and a freelance terrorist. After Cage’s character falls into a coma, Travolta goes undercover by stealing his face and infiltrates a criminal circle. The action flick was a modest success at the box office and has since become a cult classic.

While the status of the sequel is uncertain, Paramount still seems interested in making it happen. Stay tuned for more updates.
