The 2025 film Eternity serves as a balanced mixture between romantic and comedic, in turn creating a new standard for the genre. The film also brings a fresh perspective to the afterlife; making the main character choose between the two loves of her life, spinning a fun twist on the love triangle trope.
Eternity centers around Elizabeth Olsen’s (WandaVision, Godzilla) character Joan who passes away and is restored to life at a train station to explore several afterlife options, two of which include spending eternity with later husband Larry, played by Miles Teller (Whiplash, Fantastic Four), or her first husband Luke, played by Callum Turner (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Emma). Joan has to choose between her husband of 65 years or her first husband who she only married for a year before he died in the Korean War.
The film provides a fresh twist on the soulmate trope as it examines the complexities of Joan loving two men at two different stages of her life. The film equally explores her relationships between Luke and Larry which makes her decision all the more challenging and passionate. While Luke should be granted the potential of building a further relationship with Joan given their limited time together, Larry wouldn’t have anyone to settle down with. Joan considers both men as it expresses her passions in the present and past tense, giving them equal room for audiences to pick a side and explore who they were.
Eternity is available to rent on Apple TV+.
