Estate Lawsuit May Prevent Warner Bros. From Releasing James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ In Certain Countries

Superman may be running into some legal trouble which could stop the film’s release in some countries. It was previously reported back in February that Joseph Schuster’s estate (the co-creator of the character) filed a lawsuit claiming that Warner Bros. Discovery lacked the rights to distribute the new Superman film in some regions. Warner Bros. Discovery’s initial statement on the matter read, “We fundamentally disagree with the merits of the lawsuit, and will vigorously defend our rights.”

Currently, the estate’s legal team aims to “block the studio from exploiting the franchise.” This means that Warner Bros. Discovery would not be allowed to distribute Superman in the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and Canada. The studio has yet to publicly respond to this update, and it is still unclear how the lawsuit will shake out.

Superman is currently slated for release on July 11th, so the studio has a limited time frame to settle the lawsuit. If they do not come to an agreement or settle the lawsuit by then, fans in those countries may have a hard time seeing the film. This is a developing story, so stay tuned for updates on the lawsuit.
